“Materialists” Review

Celine Song is not the next Nora Ephron because she wasn’t writing a romcom!! Yes it’s a movie about love and dating and has some grand gestures, but it’s an examination into what love and dating means. The good, the bad, and the ugly. 

While some line deliveries left me wanting a bit more, the script really spoke to me. For better or for worse, I really saw myself in Lucy. And for better or for worse I saw myself in John as well! God I wish I saw more of myself in Harry lol. 

As a girly who has been on the dating market for [redacted] years now, I felt very seen by this movie!! I felt the pessimism about love!! I felt the hope about it!! I felt the resignation of it!! The scariness of it!! And I definitely felt the warring of the heart and the mind of it all.

Lucy’s line about John being the reason why she knows she’s capable of love at all? Woof. 

Meryl Streep’s daughter’s scene about the despair in recognizing that marriage is the choice she’s making for her life??? I will be thinking about that for a while I think. Kudos to Louisa Jacobson in that scene, she was incredible. 

And man, what a soundtrack.

I am officially a Materialists defender!!
